Acne develops when the sebaceous glands produce excess oil (sebum). This oil combines with cells that line the gland walls and clogs the skin’s pores. Normal skin bacteria colonise these pores and the body’s response causes the inflammation or reddening of the skin that we associate with acne.
When the skin is flooded with Blue LED Light or Blue and Red LED Light combined the bacteria self-destructs and inflammation is decreased, healthy tissue growth is stimulated, pore size decreases and limits oil production in the future = your acne fades and your skin heals. Best results will be seen between four to eight weeks after treatment. The light stimulates natural processes that occur after the treatment has stopped. On average you should expect to see an improvement to acne lesions.
This treatment is 100% natural, suitable for all ages and non-invasive so requires no ‘downtime’, you may have some skin redness after the first one or two treatments but this will fade.
The treatment should be used at the first sign of a breakout. If you suffer from severe nodular acne or severe cystic acne you will not be suitable for this type of treatment. Please consult your doctor for a more appropriate treatment. Severe nodular or severe cystic acne is characterised by having a large number of red pimples (spots) and yellow pus filled spots (pustules) with several deep nodular lesions (a solid mass of skin like a knot that is either raised or can be felt under the skin).
Although Blue LED Light Therapy is safe to receive every day a typical treatment regime would be three 20 minute sessions a week for two weeks then two 20 minute sessions for four weeks. It is possible for the acne to be clear for six months, maintenance treatments are recommended and can start 4-6 weeks after last treatment. The light therapy is not a substitute for good skin hygiene or a doctor’s care. I suggest that the light therapy is used in conjunction with a preparation prescribed by your skin specialist.
Before receiving a Blue LED Light Therapy treatment we will discuss your expectations and you will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire. If there is anything you feel may inhibit you from receiving this treatment then please feel free to ask me beforehand. not suitable if you are pregnant and please inform me if you are applying any creams or taking medication which may make you light sensitive.
