This is a treatment I use for clients who have recently received cosmetic surgery, primarily post face-lift, rhinoplasty and liposuction but can also be used effectively after knee and shoulder surgeries. The lymphatic system is part of the immune system and Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a very gentle technique used to aid the reduction of swelling, bruising and to help boost the immune system.
The lymph fluid runs close to the surface of the skin which is why only a very light pressure pumping action is required to help stimulate it. This specialised technique is beneficial because the lymph system does not have a pump to move it around the body (unlike the blood which has the heart), instead it relies on movement to help keep it working efficiently and after surgery you will generally be more sedentary.
After surgery lymph rushes to the area to aid in the healing process which may cause swelling, obviously the lymph is essential but the lymph nodes can become congested slowing down the flow and healing process. Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage stimulates the lymph nodes to clear so as to allow the ‘dirty’, stagnant lymph to drain into them more efficiently and to encourage fresh lymph into the affected area. After the treatment skin will usually start to feel more natural and less swollen. The immediate improvements vary from person to person and can be significant or subtle but typically much more noticeable the following day, as long as you are following aftercare instructions supplied by your surgeon and myself.
Before receiving a treatment you will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire. If there is anything you feel may inhibit you from receiving the massage then please feel free to ask me beforehand.
